Questions Answered: Is Travel Insurance Worth the Cost?

Every time you book a trip, whether with a travel agent or on your own, I'm sure that you've been asked if you would like to purchase travel insurance.  If you're anything like I was, you think about it for a couple of minutes and try to decide if you really want to spend the extra money, when it sounds like it's one of those types of insurance policies that you don't even need (kind of like extended warranties when you purchase something).  However, as I have learned over the time that I have been a travel agent, most of the time, it's a smart move to get it and I have seen it be a great investment for several clients.

I think that oftentimes, most people aren't exactly sure what the insurance policy actually covers and they assume it will really only cover you if there's a hurricane or another natural disaster.  My hope with this blog post is to inform you a little more on how it actually works and when it's probably ok to skip it.

Travel insurance is meant to protect you against unforeseen travel misfortunes.  Each policy is different, so it's very important to read over the policy thoroughly, however most policies will cover the following...

  • Trip Cancellation & Trip Delay. The insurance company will reimburse you your non-refundable travel costs if your trip is cancelled, interrupted or delayed due to a natural disaster, illness, plane failure, labor strikes or the carrier goes out of business. Many companies will also offer a "cancel for any reason" policy, which gives you flexibility to do just that, cancel for any reason whatsoever, up to 48 hours before departure.

  • Baggage & Personal Item Coverage. If someone steals something out of your bag or hotel room, or your luggage is lost or delayed... insurance will reimburse you for your loss.

  • Emergency Medical Insurance. You wouldn't want to go without medical insurance in your every day life, you shouldn't when you're traveling outside of the country either. Of course you never expect to become injured or ill when you're on vacation, but unfortunately that happens all the time and medical care in other countries can be very expensive, especially if you end up needing to be transported back to the U.S. Most medical insurance policies will not cover you if you leave the country.

  • Accidental Death or Dismemberment. As tragic as it may be to think about, travel insurance can protect you if you or a loved one dies on the trip or suffers a life-impairing accident.

  • There are also a select few travel insurance policies that will offer a Best Price Guarantee as well. This means, if the same exact vacation that you have booked goes on sale for a cheaper price, you will receive the difference back. I've personally helped people save hundreds of dollars on their trips who have purchased this insurance policy.

  • Many policies will also cover pre-existing conditions.

When is travel insurance maybe not necessary?

In my opinion there are two major factors to consider when deciding whether or not to purchase travel insurance...financial risk and medical concerns.  Are you concerned about losing money due to a canceled, delayed or interrupted trip, lost bags or medical expenses?  Is a large part of your trip non-refundable?  Are you leaving your home country, where your medical insurance won't cover you?  If you answer yes to any of these questions, I would highly recommend adding a travel insurance policy to your vacation package.  If you're traveling domestically and maybe using airline miles or staying with family or your able to cancel your room at the last minute, travel insurance may not be necessary.

Check with your credit card companies to see if they offer travel insurance as one of their perks.  Only 15% of credit card companies offer this, but it's definitely worth checking it out to see if this is something you could take advantage of.

I hope this information is helpful for you to use when deciding whether or not to add travel insurance to your vacation package.  Always read over the policy thoroughly to see what is and isn't covered so that you make sure you understand what benefits you're getting.

Happy Traveling!

Questions Answered: What does a travel agent do? Why should I plan & book my trip with you?

I talk with people all the time who have never used a travel agent and don't really understand the advantages of using one.  Many years ago, if you wanted to travel out of the country, you pretty much had to use a travel agent.  Now that everyone has access to the internet, a lot of people feel like they can book whatever they need on their own, but what they soon realize is that planning a trip is time-consuming and complicated.  Travel agents simplify the process.  We provide expertise and help plan entire travel packages.  I take my knowledge about different areas and resorts, combined with what you tell me you're looking for, to help you plan the perfect vacation.

Here's a list of some of the many things that I do to for my clients...

-research different locations, resorts, hotels, airlines and anything else the client is looking for.  I belong to a large network of travel experts, so if I have no personal experience with something you're looking for, I know several people who do.  In addition, I research every detail of everything about your trip, saving you precious time.

-search for the best prices.  Not only do I search for the best prices, I often get discounts only offered to travel agents that I can then pass along to you.  Find a great deal online?  I can let you know if it's a scam or usually match or beat your price if it's not.

-help you make the best informed decisions to get the most value for your vacation dollars.  There are tons of resort and hotel options available.  I can help steer you away from ones that you're probably not going to enjoy and help you find the ones that have everything you're looking for.

-make all travel arrangements.  I book flights, cruises, rental cars, hotels, resorts, transfers to/from the airport to most Mexican & Caribbean resorts, travel insurance, excursions, train tickets, bed & breakfasts, vacation homes/condos and so much more.

-relay important weather information, travel advisories or required travel documents.  I keep up with the latest travel related news and pass any information pertaining to your trip on to you.

-watch to see if your reservation goes on sale, saving you even more money.  Many travel insurance policies offer "price change guarantees".  This means that if the price of your particular trip goes down, you get the savings as well.

-set up payment plans.  With most of my resort and cruise bookings, you just have to put down a small deposit, make as many payments as you want, then pay the remaining balance 45-60 days before departure.

-become your personal advocate when unexpected things happen while you're on vacation.  Flight cancelled?  No worries.  I'll get on the phone & find you a new one.  Need to make a travel insurance claim?  I work on behalf of you.

-educate you about destinations that might be just what you're looking for.  My hope is to educate my clients (present and future) about many different possible locations to travel to.  I have a feature on my blog called "Destination Spotlight" for this reason.  Every couple of weeks I spotlight a new location that I recommend in Mexico, the Caribbean or the United States and give you information about that area.  This gives you one less thing to have to research when planning a vacation.

Questions Answered: How much do you charge?

One of the most commonly asked questions that I get when I tell someone that I'm a travel agent or begin working with a client is "How much do you charge for your services?"

It almost sounds too good to be true when I respond that I don't charge ANYTHING.  However, that is the case... I really don't charge anything.  Not all travel agents offer their services for free, but for now, this is something that I have chosen to do.

So how do I make money doing this? When you book a trip with me, those hotels, resorts or cruise lines pay me a commission for booking with them.  I don't raise your price in order to cover my commission, you pay the same price (often even less!) when you book a trip with me versus booking on your own.  I understand that everyone wants to get the best deal & the most for their money so I search many different suppliers, dates & hotels/resorts to get the best deals available.  I have access to lots of "agent only" discounts that I love passing on to my clients.  If you happen to find a better deal than I can get you, I work hard to meet or beat that price for you.

I also would never try to persuade you to book at a certain place just because they pay a higher commission.  To be honest, most places pay pretty equal when it comes to commission.  What is more important to me is that we plan a vacation that you are going to love.  My hope is that you find that planning vacations is so much easier when working with me, that you'll continue letting me help you in the future and even spread the word to your friends and family.

There really is nothing to lose (and a lot to gain!) by booking your vacations with me.  If you've never worked with a travel agent before because you thought it would cost you more, I would love to show you just how priceless (& FREE) my help can be.  Contact me to get started on planning your next adventure!
